The Third Day

Yellow Group

This is a rock that I saw along a stream as we hiked to Whelton Falls.
These are the trees that had fallen across a stream that I saw as we ate lunch.
This is the tree from which the seeker in camoflauge looked for the hiding people.

On the third day we came downstairs later than we did on the second day because we had packed our bags after waking up. We had hot chocolate again and then breakfast. On the last day we had french toast and only one tenth of a pound of ORT, more than at dinner, but less than previous meals. We went through the same process of packing lunch except that my group wasn't last this time. I had the same lunch as on the second day and then we grabbed our bags and headed out.

Because one leader couldn't have his group that day, his group was split among the others. Garrett and Julie joined our group and we went to Whelton Falls. The cucumber root battle continued, though there were fewer along this trail. We passed an old cellar hole and climbed in it. We also made a waypoint there. Some people in our group shook water down from the trees as we hiked so we were all damp by the time we reached Whelton Falls.

After looking at the waterfall from the trail, we went down and explored the caves just upstream. After that we rock jumped for a while, making farther and farther stretches between rocks. Then we headed back along the trail. A lot of people's shoes got wet, but nobody minded much.

After crossing a stream we stopped for a waypoint and snack, and a little farther along, for lunch on an outcropping above the stream. As we were eating the sun came out, which warmed us up a bit. We finished our lunch at a leisurely pace and then sat for a while before beginning to hiking again.

Shortly after, we played camouflage. I was the seeker first and I found almost everyone. People whom I had found came and helped me too, so soon many people were looking. Aiden won the first round so he was seeker for the second round. I hid in a stream bed with a tiny trickle of water running through. Then we made our sixth and final waypoint and headed back toward the lodge.

Right before we reached the lodge we caught up with another group who had also been to Whelton Falls and we finished our hike back with them. We found a few groups already back when we got there so we joined them after meeting with Fern (our group leader) briefly. Everybody milled around as more groups arrived. Soon the bus pulled up and after maneuvering around for a while, turned around and allowed us to cram on. The ride home was uneventful and when we got back, my field hockey teammates and I went straight to our home game.

Day three is an example of regions in many ways. One region we visited was the region of Whelton Falls. Another region was the region of the cellar hole. Yet another region is the region of the AMC lodge where we started and ended our hike. When we rode on the bus we traveled from the region of Grafton County to the region of Merrimack County. We traveled through many regions on our second day throughtout our many activities.
